Set Design

On stage is a table with 3 very different chairs, a bowl and mug at each place, a large pitcher of milk and a basket with several vegetables in it including carrots.  The bowl and mug can be empty, but in the action of the story they each will have something inside of it.

Mamma’s chair has a huge cushion on it, Pappa’s chair has nothing while Rory’s chair has a small cushion.

At rise – Rory is sitting at the table in his/her chair.  Mamma Bear is busy stirring a pot.

SCENE 1

Pappa Bear enters holding three different color ties.

Pappa: I can’t pick a tie.  Which tie should I wear?

Mamma: They both look nice, dear.

Pappa: I know that.  I don’t know which one sets the right tone for today’s meeting.

Mamma: I like the blue one.

Pappa: Perfect.  (a beat)  Well, now I’m thinking I should wear the red one.

Mamma: The red one is nice too.

Pappa: Great.  The green one it is.

Pappa puts on his tie as he sits in his seat.

Rory: Good morning, Pappa.

Pappa: Good morning, Rory.  How is your breakfast?

Rory: Mamma hasn’t served it yet.

Mamma: I’m a bit behind this morning.

Pappa: Do you need help?

Mamma: No, I’m almost done.

Pappa: What are we having today?

Mamma: Oatmeal with fruit.

Rory: What kind of fruit?

Mamma: Your favorites.  For Pappa I have apples, for Rory I have mango and for me pineapple.

Rory: Yummy! I love mago!

Mamma: I know that you do.  Here we are, breakfast.

Mamma scoops out oatmeal into each of the 3 bowls, then tops each with their favorite fruit.

Rory: Thanks Mamma.

Pappa: Thanks Mamma.

Mamma sits.  The family grabs a spoon and digs into their oatmeal.

Mamma: Oh, no!

Pappa: Yikes!

Rory: This is way too hot!

Mamma: I should have known.  I just finished cooking it.  What can we do now?

Pappa: I have an idea.  Why don’t we go out for a nice morning walk?

Rory: That sounds like a fun idea.  I can collect more pine cones for my art project.

Mamma: I can pick some fresh apples to make a pie with dinner tonight.

Pappa: Then it is settled.  We will go out for a walk and collect pine cones and apples.

Rory: Yay.  I’ll bring my pinecone bag.  (grabs his bag)

Mamma: I’ll grab my apple basket. (picks up her basket).

Pappa: I’m not sure about this tie.  I’ll have to think more about it. (he takes off his tie and puts in on the table with the other one)

Mamma: What about your green tie?

Rory: I like the blue one.

Pappa: I’m just not sure.  Is everyone ready to go?

Mamma: Ready.

Rory: Ready!

Pappa: Let’s go.

The three bears exit the stage. A moment later we hear a knock at the door.

Goldilocks: (enters) Hello?  Is anyone home?  My name is Goldilocks.  I was on my way home and I think I took the wrong path.  Do you happen to know how to get back to town?  (a beat) Hello?  Anyone here?  Bummer.  No one is home.  Ugh.  I’m tired and hungry. Something smells wonderful.  (crosses to the table) Oh, oatmeal!  I love oatmeal.  It looks nice and warm.  (shouts one last time) Hello?  Can I have some of this delicious oatmeal?  (waits a moment, then to herself) Well, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if I try some oatmeal.  (she sits at Mamma's place) Oh, this chair is way too soft.  Who puts a cushion like this on a chair.  My butt sinks right into it. (she pushes Mamma’s chair off to the side, then sits in Pappa’s chair)  Oh gosh.  This chair is as hard as a rock. My poor butt is going to get sore sitting on this thing.  (she pushes Pappa’s chair aside and sits in Rory’s chair)  Oh, yeah, baby! This chair is just right.  My butt has just enough cushion and the lumbar support is perfect.  This is the spot to be in.

There is suddenly a knock at the door.  Goldilocks freaks out.  Rabbit enters and Goldilocks spins around in the chair.

Rabbit: Oh, Rory.  Are your parent’s home?

Goldilocks: (disguising her voice) No.

Rabbit: Well, I just needed to borrow a few carrots.  I’m making a nice platter for lunch and I ran out of carrots.  You know how much my family loves carrots.  Let’s be honest, I love them too.

Goldilocks: (disguising her voice) Sure.

Rabbit: Thank you.  (crosses to the table and grabs some carrots) I’ll only take a few.  Tell your mamma that I will replace them tomorrow. I’ll go into town and grab some more carrots and bring them right over.

Goldilocks: (disguising her voice) Great.

Rabbit: You know, carrots are really good for you. They say that they are good for your eyes.  I’m not sure who ‘they’ are.  Maybe doctors? Honestly, I don’t really know if carrots are good for you. It’s just something we’ve always been told.  My mamma told me that when I was little.  I tell my kids that.  It’s a big cycle.  Thank goodness I like carrots.  Imagine if my mamma told me that something else was good for you?  Something I don’t like.  Eww, like cabbage.  I wonder if cabbage is good for you?  I’ll tell you a secret, Rory.  Cabbage gives me … gas.  Yup, I fart up a storm when I eat cabbage.   (Goldilocks starts to laugh) It sure is funny! I mean, it’s like the second I each just a bit of cabbage (makes a farting noise).  I can clear a room! (Rabbit starts laughing and puts the carrots down on the table.  Rabbit crosses to Goldilocks and puts his/her hand on her shoulder as they both laugh.  Goldilocks instantly stops laughing)  Oh, I haven’t laughed like that in years.  I better get going.  I have to finish my platter.  (goes to exit as Goldilocks starts to turn around) Oh, wait! (turns back to the tabe and Goldilocks instantly turns)  I forgot the carrots. (crosses and grabs the carrots) Thanks Rory.  Tell your parents I said ‘hello’. (exits)

Goldilocks: (turns around) That was a close one.  Back to eating.  Three bowls.  Mmmm.  (grabs mamma’s bowl and takes a scoop). Oh.  Ewww. Pineapple on oatmeal?  What is wrong with this person! I bet they put pineapple on pizza too.  Gross. (tosses mamma’s bowl to the side and grabs papa’s bowl) Now this is better, apples.  (takes a scoop and eats it, then suddenly spits it out) Apples without cinnamon!  What monster does this?  When you have apples you automatically put in cinnamon.  This is nasty.  Just plain nasty. (tosses pappa’s bowl off to the side and grabs Rory’s bowl, takes a scoop and inspects it) Is that … mango?  Yes!  The best.  I love mango. (she starts eating it and talking with her mouthful) Mango’s don’t need anything special. They are tropical and wonderful all by themselves. Delicious. (she finishes the whole bowl, licking the bowl to get every last drop out).  That’s some good stuff.
